Although all this information is
contained in my resume, I offer this as a quick reference
on my qualifications as a teacher, tutor, and workshop
leader.
I completed
my B.S. in secondary education with a major in mathematics
in 1972, a Master of Arts in College Teaching in 1975 and
my Ph.D. in mathematics education in 1985. I have been
teaching math since 1972, including high school and junior
college. I joined the faculty of Georgia State University
in 1980, where I taught for the Department of Mathematics
for three years and for the Department of Developmental
Studies for five more.
Since 1982, I
have been a professional tutor at The Math Set in Atlanta,
where I have worked one-on-one with students with different
learning styles and a wide variety of learning
difficulties. My youngest student was four years old and my
oldest student was in graduate school. During my time with
The Math Set, I have evaluated hundreds of students to help
identify their difficulties in mathematics.
I co-authored the teacher training text
“Mathematics for
Every Young Child”
by Schultz, Colarusso, and Strawderman
which addresses how to accommodate students who have
learning challenges and is available through Amazon.com.
In 2002 I started Home Math Help and developed
games and activities to help make learning math fun. So far I have created
seven games that I have sold at home-school fairs and
I am working on more games and activities that will be published soon.
